Medusa was a beautiful maiden but was a high priestess in the Temple of Athena in Athens, sworn to be a virgin. However, but when she was caught being raped by the Lord of the Sea, Poseidon, while worshiping in Athena’s temple, the enraged Athena transformed Medusa’s beautiful hair to serpents and made her face so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it would turn onlookers to stone. She would sometimes be described as the “living personification of death.”
COATLICUE . is the Aztec goddess who gave birth to the moon, stars, and Huitzilopochtli, the god of the sun and war. She is also known as Toci (“our grandmother”) and Cihuacoatl (“the lady of the serpent”), the patron of women who die in childbirth.
